Gru and Dru would have been better serviced by spending an entire movie alone, unrestricted by offshooting adventures. The product of child stardom and short-lived fame, Bratt’s entire aesthetic is I Love The 80s with an unavoidable South Park echo. Will Gru renounce his allegiance to good and dive back into his old, bad ways? Which is a shame, because Trey Parker’s Balthazar Bratt is one of the greatest supervillains ever introduced, only to be pushed aside for weaker material. Unicorn obsessions are sweet and motherly duties fight for acceptance, yet 90 minutes just isn’t enough time to dignify each aside. Writers Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio establish these tangential arcs meant to develop each singular character, which means less time for “hero” versus villain looniness. All the gadgets and gizmos still tinker with zaniness – and yes, your minions are safe – but Despicable Me 3 if a family reunion better avoided. His ambitions now steer towards righteousness.
The former recluse is now a tamed father figure. Love them or loathe them (how could you?), there's no denying Illumination have created spectacularly infectious and appealing characters for young children to enjoy.As the Despicable Me franchise continues to evolve, 2010’s dastardly Gru is but a distant memory. Certainly, the characters of the movie will be enough to sell it as the summer blockbuster for families, and another excuse for Minions merchandise to invade every shop in the land. The plot of Despicable Me 3 doesn't really seem to differ much from the previous two installments that is to say, this time around Gru is having problems bonding with Dru rather than his adopted children, but despite the lack of imaginative storyline, Despicable Me 3 still looks to be a whole lot of fun. Russell Brand also returns from Despicable Me 2 as Dr. Kristen Wiig also returns as the voice of Lucy Gru's former arch-nemesis now turned wife. Steve Carell once again lends his voice to Gru, and also to Dru, while South Park co-creator Trey Parker voices Balthazar Bratt. Despicable Me 3 sees Despicable Me 1 & 2 director Pierre Coffin back at the helm, with Kyle Balda ( Minions) and Despicable Me franchise character designer Eric Guillon as his co-directors.
